Cleansing Grains For Dry Skin
If you have been reading my blog you know that I am not a huge fan of products that lather. I find them drying and irritating to the skin. Have you heard of cleansing grains before? They are not that popular although I know that Bobbie Brown offers cleansing grains that sell for $45. I wanted this post to be about cleansing grains for dry skin.
What are cleansing grains?
Cleansing grains are powered grains that you add water to. Cleansing grains for dry skin are made up of ingredients that are both gentle and hydrating. There is usually a mixture of clay and powdered botanicals.
Cleansing grains can exfoliate the skin. Rather than using harsh scrubs to remove dead skin cells. These cleansing grains can gently unclogs pores making the skin feel fresh and softer.
Cleansing grains can gently exfoliate. I mentioned the importance of exfoliation in another post. Exfoliation helps remove the outer dead skin cells which can help improve the skin’s appearance. Most exfoliating cleansing grains are a combination of a simple blend of flower blossoms and powdered grains.
Botanicals that can be found in cleansing grains include,
Rose petals provide a natural scent and are calming to the skin.
Lavender blossoms as they provide a nice scent. I have talked about this before. people love a good scented product but in order to make a product smell nice synthetic fragrances may be used. Synthetic fragrances can have harsh chemicals that can be damaging to our health. Essential oils can also be used. In low amounts most are fine and I do use essential oils in some of my products. At higher levels essential oils can actually irritate the skin.
Calendula soothing and calming to the skin.
Chamomile soothing and calming to the skin.
Seaweed can be moisturizing to the skin. Some seaweed can clog the pores so if you are prone to breakouts you may want to avoid this ingredients That being said if you are using the cleansing rains as a cleanser and not a mask there is little skin contact so I would not expect you to break out as much as you would with a face lotion that contained seaweed.
Coconut powder can be great for moisturizing. Coconut can be comedogenic, that is it can block the pores. If you are prone to developing breakouts this may be an ingredient that you avoid.
Ground oats can help gently exfoliate and calm the skin.
Ground seeds and nuts. You may see powered nuts. I prefer oats as they can help with dry skin, this is why you see them in some popular moisturizers. I also think that some of the ground nuts may be too harsh for my gentle skin. If you have ground almond powder at home try it. See if it irritates your skin.
Brown rice can be used to exfoliate the skin. I have used powdered rice but I fell that it is too much for my sensitive skin and have not included in them in my products.
