DIY foaming hand soap recipe

If you like a foaming hand soap then you are going to like this DIY foaming hand soap recipe. There are a number of ingredients that are concerning in hand soaps. Here are a few of the ingredients that are concerning,

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a common ingredient in liquid soaps, it helps with lathering. It is linked to skin and eye irritation. Usually this is not a problem as we are not leaving soap on our skin for any length of time, most of it is washed away. Unfortunately, some people are sensitive and will experience drying with SLS. Sodium Laureth Sulfate can be less irritating to the skin but it can be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane during the manufacturing process. 1,4 dioxane is thought to be carcinogenic.

Sodium benzoate

Sodium benzoate is a preservative found in a  foods and some personal care products. Sodium benzoate doesn’t contain benzene but it can form benzene when combined with ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Benzene has been linked to leukemia.

Artificial colors

Synthetic colors can be made from coal tar. They can also contain heavy metal salts that can linger on the skin which may cause skin sensitivity and irritation.

Fragrancesdiy foaming hand soap recipe

Synthetic fragrances often contain phthalates as they can help make the scent last longer. Phthalates are thought to be endocrine disruptors. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine if a particular product contains phthalates as they fall under “fragrance”. The FDA doesn’t require companies to disclose the exact fragrance ingredients because these fragrant chemicals are considered “trade secrets.”  You may have heard about the fragrance loophole, it certainly is a loophole.

Hopefully with greater awareness changes will be made, we have seen some changes already. We know that Triclosan which is an antibacterial compound has been banned from hand soaps. There was a concern for antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. Unfortunately, this substance is still found in other personal care products such as toothpaste.
