Face Skin Tapping Tapping Your Skin
I heard that tapping your skin can help prevent wrinkles. We know that massaging and or face skin tapping can increase blood supply to the skin which can increase oxygen and nutrients to the area. Can this increase in oxygen and nutrients actually help reduce or prevent wrinkles? I did some research and this is what I came up with.
What is face tapping?
Face skin tapping, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a method where you use your fingertips to tap on key energy points on your head, face, and collar bones. Face tapping is very similar to acupuncture with origins from traditional Chinese medicine. These points are based on the traditional Chinese medicinal belief that the body’s has an energy, or “ch’i.”
According to Natural Living’s website, “the human body contains a network of energy pathways through which vital energy, called “chi,” circulates. These pathways (also called meridians) contain specific points that function like gates, allowing chi to flow through the body.” Acupuncture and or tapping use these meridian points to “change the flow”
In some cases tapping can be used along with positive affirmations which is a form of cognitive therapy.
Face skin tapping has been used in people who have an obsession with picking their skin. It is thought that facial tapping can calm down the amygdala which is part of the brain that functions in excitement.
I have seen claims that face skin tapping can help improve acne.
Face skin tapping can be performed anywhere at anytime without the need for an acupuncturist or needles.
What happens when we age?
As we age the collagen levels decrease. Environmental factors such as ultraviolet and pollution exposure increase free radicals which contribute to the depletion of collagen. In addition to environmental factors your choice of lifestyle can also contribute. Not getting enough sleep, drinking and smoking too much as as well as too much stress can also speed up the aging process.
Is there any science behind face tapping?
We know that anything that increases blood supply and promotes lymphatic drainage can help dilate the blood vessels and increase blood flow to the area, which can remove free radicals and toxins. This is thought to help prevent collagen breakdown.
There were no well defined studies that supported the ability of face tapping to reduce wrinkle formation.
There was support in the literature for facial exercises. On study from Northwestern University suggested that 20 weeks of facial exercises firmer skin with fuller cheeks, “Now there is some evidence that facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of aging,” said lead author Dr. Murad Alam, vice chair and professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine dermatologist. “The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face.”
“As the face ages, skin loses elasticity and fat pads between the muscle and skin become thinner. The fat pads, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, give the face much of its shape. As skin becomes saggy, the thinning fat pads atrophy and slide, causing the face to “fall down.”
“But if muscle underneath becomes bigger, the skin has more stuffing underneath it and the firmer muscle appears to make the shape of the face more full,” said senior study author Emily Poon, an assistant research professor in dermatology at Feinberg. “Muscle growth is increasing the facial volume and counteracting the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening.”
One study concluded that EFT was beneficial and cost effective. Emotional Freedom Techniques was used in to treat college students. After four 90 minutes sessions there was less depression.
Rhythmic tapping has been shown to decrease pain during an injection.
Acupuncture has been shown to be helpful. According to Harvard Health,
“Acupuncture also may quicken recovery. A review published in the January 2017 Programme Grants for Applied Research examined 29 trials involving 18,000 people diagnosed with chronic pain in the neck, lower back, head, or knee. The report showed that the addition of acupuncture, compared with just standard medical care, reduced the number of headaches and migraine attacks and lowered the severity of neck and lower back pain.” Other studies have shown mixed results.
Key areas for tapping your face
These areas follow the same meridian points used in acupuncture. seven main tapping points:
1) the top of the head,
2) the medial points of the eyebrows,
3) the lateral sides of the eyes
4) under the eyes
5) under the nose, above the lip.
6) under the lip, above the chin.
7) Collar bone towards the center

If you tap too hard there is potential to damage fragile underlying capillaries, especially in those who have rosacea.
Slapping the face had also been described….I think I prefer tapping over slapping. According to a Daily News Article, “Thai beauty technique known as face-slapping “helps with wrinkles, makes your face slimmer and makes your pores smaller,” according to Mawin Sombuntham, who co-owns Tata Massage in San Francisco.” The fee was $350, the article was from 2012.
Other suggestions to help prevent premature aging of the skin
Protect your skin and eyes from the sun by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Stop smoking which can further age the skin.
Exercise which helps increase blood supply to the face.
Increase water intake to hydrate the skin and decrease alcohol intake which tends to cause dehydration.
Eat healthy meals that will provide protein, healthy fats and fiber.
Drink herbal tea rather than coffee throughout the day.
