Hyaluronic Acid For Wrinkles

In this article I wanted to discuss hyaluronic acid and the use of hyaluronic acid for wrinkles.

What is hyaluronic acid you ask?

Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate molecule also referred to as a polysaccharide which is a naturally occurring in our bodies. It is found in may areas of our body including the skin and joints.

Hyaluronic acid  plays an important role in the synthesis of extracellular material and skin (epidermal) cell interaction with the surrounding environment, it is a glycosaminoglycan. One of its most important properties is that it can attach and hold large amounts of water which can help keep the skin hydrated.

In addition to hydration, hyaluronic acid has been shown to be an antioxidant in the lab (in-vitro studies). Hyaluronic acid is injected into the knees in some patients with arthritis.

Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles -formula creation

hyaluronic acid for wrinklesWhen I look at skin care products I look at the ingredients. Humectants, a substance that attracts water, is a great ingredients in products that moisturize. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, it is a moisture-binding ingredient. This is why I sell products with hyaluronic acid in them, they can help decrease the appearance of dried skin and fine lines. It has been reported that hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. This is super hydrating!

Hyaluronic acid is gentle and calming to the skin. One one hears acid they may get alarmed but hyaluronic is calming even for the most sensitive skin. If you have any concerns do a patch test to ensure there is no reaction. I encourage patch tests will all new products.

Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles in the literature

Unfortunately as we age the levels of hyaluronic acid in our skins decrease.

The was a small study that supported the use of hyaluronic in skin care,

“The new nano-hyaluronic acid clearly demonstrated a significant benefit in decreasing the depth of wrinkles (up to 40%), and skin hydration (up to 96%) and skin firmness and elasticity were significantly enhanced (up to 55%) at the end of eight weeks.”

It is important to note that hyaluronic acid comes in all different sizes. This study used low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, the smaller molecules are thought to penetrate a little deeper into the skin. Remember, one of our skin’s function is to protect us. It does not want to allow molecules through, this includes skin care products.

This study summarized the results of the study, “a statistically significant moisturizing effect was observed with nano-hyaluronic acid in the full product range—cream, serum, and lotion. After 2,4, and 8 weeks of treatment, the skin was significantly more hydrated than the untreated skin. Measurement of skin roughness showed a significantly finer skin structure (Ra) after two weeks of treatment with the full product range. In addition, an improvement of skin elasticity (r7) was measured in comparison to untreated skin and demonstrated a significant improvement after two weeks of treatment and continued throughout the study.”

Hyaluronic acid can moisturize and plump up the skin. We know that as we age the skin becomes dull, an exfoliant can help increase our skins turnover. This also allows ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the tissue that lies below. Hydrated skin is less likely to show fine lines whereas dry skin accentuates fine lines. Plump skin also feels more supple and appears firmer.

Hydrating the skin helps our acid mantle, a protective film that lies over our skin. When the acid mantle is disturbed, skin is more likely to be red and irritated. Adding ingredients that help hydrate and protect the acid mantle is key to maintaining and achieving plump moisturized skin.

Hyaluronic acid for wrinkles -Injectable fillers

Hyaluronic acid is used in may of the injectable facial fillers that are on the market today. There are not permanent as hyaluronic acid will breakdown over time. Some products are formulated with more cross-linking which allows the substance to hang around longer.
