Stress increases our health risks and usually makes us less productive. let’s talk about natural ways to reduce stress.
Lack of sleep can raise your risk of blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Getting enough sleep, typically 7-8 hours a night, will help increase your mental clarity and decrease stress levels. You are more likely to become stressed if you did not sleep enough. This makes sense. How can you function as well if you haven’t let your body rest! Consider leaving electronic devices such as phones out of your bedroom.
Meditate and be mindful
Take a few minutes to deep breathe and focus on where you on. Be present and mindful rather than rushing through something, Slow deep breaths can help calm the mind and lower stress.
Eat your vegetables
Vegetables contain a ton of anti-oxidants. Select dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale and swiss chard provide your body with essential minerals and nutrients. Think of a rainbow of colors, Your plate should have multiple colors on it. These colorful foods provide antioxidants which can help support your immune system. This is especially important in the winter when there is less air ventilation and more germs. Eating a healthy diet can help your body fight stress.
Exercise will help decrease the risk of depression. Go for a walk, even if you have to bundle up. Equipment such as a stationary bicycle and or treadmill will allow you to get exercise without having to leave your home. Yoga is another way to exercise while calming the mind. Join a gym if you want more of a social interaction and or enjoy classes. Either way make an effort to exercise to help your body cope with stress.
Scents can help you feel more relaxed. Lavender or rose are typically enjoyed by most people. Different types of scents whether they are floral or citrus are thought to elicit a range of emotions. Aromatherapy can help you to relax and relieve stress. Try to use a reputable company so that there is less risk of synthetic components and cheaper oils mixed into your “pure essential oil”.
Call a friend
Whether meeting for coffee ot just talking on the phone, a social connection can help decrease stress and ground you. Social interactions can also help decrease the risk of depression.
Play some music
Music is known to help calm your mind and improve your mood. Dancing to some tunes can also help improve your mood. So what are you waiting for? Turn up the tunes and dance.
Being thankful allows you to be more appreciative of your life and surroundings. Journaling about things you are thankful for each day can help increase awareness of what you have rather than what you don’t have. Science has shown that gratitude helps promote positive feelings. The same goes for volunteering. Helping others make you more appreciative of what you have. There are many unfortunate people in this world, go out of your way to help someone else.
Take time for yourself
Turn off the social media and read a good book, watch a funny movie or go for a long walk. Do something that will make you laugh. Whatever you are leaving behind for a short while will be there when you get back.
