Why you should consider oil facial cleansers

Oil facial cleansers can help keep our skin hydrated without removing necessary oils that help protect our skin.

What is oil cleansing?

Oil cleansing is using an oil to cleanse the skin, I like these products because they can help condition as it cleanses the skin.

We know that oil dissolves oil. it is basic chemistry, like dissolves like. Most makeup is oil based, so oil cleansing can help remove your makeup without having to scrub and rub your face.

Oil cleansing is not something new, Shu Uemura was first released in the 1960s. It contained mineral oil to help cleanse the face Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi Skin Refining Anti-Dullness Cleansing Oil 150Ml/5Oz According to their website, “in 1967, Mr. Uemura made history by introducing the first oil-based cleanser to japan. The cleansing oil’s exceptional reputation and gentle effectiveness quickly convinced the public of its skincare benefits and is now an emblematic product of the shu uemura brand.”

Why should we wash our face before going to bed everynight?

Makeup, sunscreen, bacteria, dead skin cells, dirt, and oil build up on your face during the day. This debris can get into our pores which lead to blackheads and blemishes.

Tips for cleansing the face

Look for cleansers that can help moisturize the skin, not dry it out. Some alcohols can be drying to the skin.

Avoid very hot water which can strip the skin.

Consider patting your face, do not rub too hard which can damage the fragile facial skin.

Some facial cleansers will contain beads and or acids which can help exfoliate the skin. Remember, exfoliation is important but too much exfoliation can dry out the skin. Toners, face masks and acne products can all be very drying to the skin.

Why you should consider an oil facial cleanser?

Oil cleansers to not contain sulfates or surfactants which act as detergents. These ingredients can be drying to the skin as you body’s natural oils are stripped away. You may feel that you skin is tighter after washing with a detergent cleanser, this is not always a good thing.

In another article we talked about the importance of preserving the acid mantle. The acid mantle is designed to help protect the skin, harsh detergents can breakdown the acid mantle.

Our skin’s pH is normally around 5 yet many cleansers have a high pH which can irritate the skin as well.

How to use oil facial cleansers?

I splash lukewarm water on my face then use a few drops of my Wrinkle Helper’s  Oil Facial Cleanser. I pat the oil cleanser into my face. I pay special attention to my eye area if I am wearing eye makeup. Try not to rub your face, especially around the eye area where the skin is delicate.

I have a few friends that will place a warm, damp washcloth on the face for 20 seconds. The steam can help open pores to remove impurities. They then remove the washcloth and massage the facial oil cleanser into the skin. You can either wait a few seconds to let the oil cleanser condition your skin or you can remove with either splashing your face with warm water or pating the face with a warm damp washcloth to remove the excess oil.

anti aging facial oil cleanserPrior to using oil cleansers, I was using a moisturizer to cleanse my facial skin. I did some research and came up with a recipe for an oil facial cleanser designed for dry skin. I like the smell of this product and have been happy with the soft supple feeling of my skin. My oil cleanser contains a lower level of castor oil. Castor oil is an astringent which is great for cleaning but can be too drying, especially if you have dry skin.

There are also oil cleansers that are designed for oily skin. People with oily skin tend to over wash and use skin care products that can dry out their skin leading to skin irritation. This skin irritated skin can flake which can lead to blocked pores making the acne and blemishes worse. That is why a moisturizer may be recommended for acne prone skin, you want to avoid this flaking dry skin when using acne products.
