I am always looking for a good blog idea. Recently I came across a quote by Confucius,  “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… These are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.”

Confucius  was a Chinese philosopher who lived may years ago (551 B.C. – 479 B.C).

This quote made me think. Why do some of us have an internal drive to to go above and beyond. I am not sure this is a trait that can be taught. People either have it or they don’t,  perhaps some of you do not agree. I would love to hear your thoughts.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change

May years ago I sat on the sidelines of an ice skating rink watching my 3 year old daughter on an outside  rink. It her first lesson. The temperature was in the 30’s with a strong wind that ripped right through you.  I was going to cancel the lesson but she was determined to go. I watched her fall over and over again on the cold ice. I thought any second now the tears will come and she will give up. She must have fallen 20 or so times but she never gave up. My daughter displayed an internal drive that surprised me. She is still highly self motivated to this day.

You cannot teach someone to get up after they fall, it is something they want and have to do for themselves. Some of us enjoy and have great enthusiasm for challenging themselves and others think it requires too much of an effort.

You have to have the will to start something. No task will ever be completed unless you first start and then persist at it. Sir Isaac Newton once mentioned “bodies at rest tend to stay at rest”.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Confucius

Some of us are more positive than others when it comes to failures. Some of us can push pass their failures and will learn from them. These failures will not define them.

“You cannot open a book without learning something.” Confucius

Outliers: The Story of Success

Learning never stops. Some people enjoy engaging and learning new things. In time, they may apply this knowledge to something  unrelated. The result, nothing short of genius.

“To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge.” Confucius

Some people will look for others to help when they realize they cannot do a task by themselves. They will seek the experts who can help them succeed. In medicine, I have seen others continue to do it themselves not realizing they have no clue what they are doing, even if it means hurting others.

“Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.” Confucius

Some of us will have a clear plan on what they want and how they will do it. Many business consultants will push for you to have a business plan. They want you to have direction.

Sometimes the plans change. Being able to look beyond this change of circumstance is needed to succeed. You may face obstacles and yes even boredom but giving up is simply not an option.

When anger rises, think of the consequences. Confucius

Some us us think before they speak, they are able to control their emotions. They will have less enemies than those who lash out.

“Never contract friendship with a man that is not better than thyself.” Confucius

You are more out to succeed if you surround yourself with people who push themselves, they are the motivators. This is true in all aspects of life. You become what is accepted from those around you. If you surround yourself with competitive people you will probably push yourself further.

What do you think helps with motivation?
